Tony Skottowe

Borough Councillor for Handside

Tony and his family first moved into WGC in 1973 and have lived in their house in Handside for all but the first three years. Much of his time has been spent on local projects that were people based and covering music, he was heavily involved in creating Welwyn Opera, and the heritage of WGC as the second Garden City in world. The latter, started to encourage residents to take pride in the town, has grown and has now merged to create ‘Together for Welwyn Garden City’. With its research and specialist planning the town’s residents have an invaluable source local knowledge to seek help from if needed.

Education was another area for Tony with some years teaching maths and computing at Monks Walk school before moving into investment management with a company based in Welwyn Village and finally retiring to concentrate on his garden. Recent events, in particular the threat of local government reorganisation, posed by the Labour government, has brought Tony back to the fray and it was he who proposed the council motion to set up a Town Council for WGC. ‘The challenge that the town’s unique heritage would be lost and our ability to influence our own affairs ignored has to be fought for’, is Tony’s plea to you all.
