Leader of Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council, Borough Councillor for Welham Green and Hatfield South & County Councillor for Hatfield South
Paul is Leader of Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council, he is also a Borough and County Councillor and Group Leader of the Welhat Lib Dem Group.
Paul came to be known for the sterling work he did campaigning against the incinerator planned for Hatfield. He was a key figure in the fight against the Conservative-led County Council's plan to burn all the county's rubbish at New Barnfield from the moment the plan was announced in November 2007 right up to the point where the Government threw out the plan in 2015.
More recently, Paul has played a major part in Lib Dem efforts to protect our communities and our green spaces by challenging the Conservative Council's Housing plan, including pushing for more schools, road upgrades, better NHS services and improved leisure services where development will be forced on us, so current residents are disadvantaged as little as possible.
Paul has lived in Hatfield for over 20 years. His children have grown up and gone to local schools in the area. He cares deeply about our Borough. He will work hard to make Welwyn Hatfield a better place to live, work and play.
On the Council
On the Borough Council, Paul is now the official Leader of Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council, leading the large Lib Dem contingent of 14 councillors and the Joint Administration with Labour..
Paul has pushed to get a better service and better deal for residents from the Borough Council. He sees the previous adminidtation as a ‘Can’t Do’ organisation and believes it needs to become a ‘Can Do’ one. The Conservatives had been in power for over 20 years and were stale and failing. A change really was needed, and Paul believes passionately that the Lib Dems can deliver the change we all need by leading the new administration.
On the County Council, Paul is the Shadow Cabinet member for Growth, Infrastructure and Planning. The Liberal Democrats are the official opposition on the County Council.
Paul has worked hard to improve the state of our roads and pavements, addressing the appalling neglect that Herts County Council continues to show, although this is a massive uphill struggle since the Conservatives at County Hall still hold the purse-strings tightly. Things need to change and Paul believes he has helped start to make that happen, pressing the Conservatives to provide the services and support the people of Hertfordshire pay for and deserve.
"I would like to thank each and every person who voted for me and my fellow Lib Dems over the last few years. Our group on the Borough Council has grown from just two in 2015 to 14 in 2023, and we hope that will continue as more residents see what superb local champions Lib Dem councillors are. It is fantastic to know that people across Welwyn Hatfield continue to support our efforts to make our area a better place to live and work. I'll do all I can to ensure I repay your faith and I'll continue to fight to get the best possible deal for everyone who lives in our Borough."
