A record of Action, a promise of moreThis year's election is a crucial one - it is up to you to make sure Handside Ward continues to provide an intelligent and constructive LibDem opposition on what will be another conservative dominated council. Our record of working for residents and campaigning on the issues YOU care about speaks for itelf. The Conservatives make many claims but it was only at OUR instigation that they signed up to the Nottingham Declaration on Climate Change, and in response to OUR pressure that they promised plastics recycling. It was the Lib Dems who saw the rist of losing Hatfield Hospital and began the all party campaign. It was the Lib Dems who took up the issue of motorway noise. Now we have a quieter road surface. And now the Lib Dems are trying to do something about YOUR swimming pool at Stanborough Lakes that was closed down, by campaigning for a new swimming pool for Welwyn Garden City. You have three votes this year. Please use them all to support our candidates. You will not be disappointed. Tony Skottowe
Tony Skottowe, 60 Bridge Rd, AL8 6UR Tel 01707 324 828. Tony needs no introduction. He has been a stalwart of the area for as long as most can remember. Tony's career has spanned teaching, engineering and finance. Tony taught maths and computing at Monks Walk School and then in Hatfield and Stevenage. After that he became a financial advisor. He is now an investment research based manager in Codicote. He is a champion of conservation and heritage issues, and a member of the Welwyn Garden City Society. Many of you will rmember his stand on the Cowper Cottages which led to the founding of the Welwyn Garden City Heritage Trust. Many of your know at first hand how Tony is adept at taking up residents' concerns, whether it is a matter of waste collections, fence repairs, hosuing issues or simply arranging a new bin. Tony is always there with a smile and a solution. Tony's diplomacy and understanding are legendary and his knowledge of the area and the council make him an excellent choice for the area. His capacity for methodical problem solving, organisation and sheer hard work means that everything is reassuringly under control when it needs to be. He deserves your vote on May 1st - please make sure he gets another term in office. Nigel Quinton
29 Lemsford Village, AL8 7TN, 01707 372673. Since his election in 2006, Nigel Quinton has established himself as one of the borough's most active councillors. Nigel had a successful career as a geologist and technical entrepeneur, co-founding and running an independent oil exploration company before taking a break three years ago to do consultancy work and to concentrate on putting his energy into his role as a councillor. Nigel still does occasional consultancy work, but spends most of his time on local campaigning issues. Nigel's hobbies include cricket and orienteering. Apart from dealing with many residents' problems in Handside, he has led the fight for the new hospital, campaigned to save New Briars school in Hatfield, served on the environment and social overview and scrutiny committees and on several scrutiny panels. A vast amount of his time in the past 18 months has been spent on the cross party hospital SOS campaign and in his role as a Borough Health Champion. His contribution has been recognised by all sides of the debate, and he has stood in for his conservative colleague on the county scrutiny committee on several occasions. Nigel is determined to continue to fight for better health provisions in our area, but also to campaign on environmental issues, in particular energy efficiency and water conservation. Adam Neal
