Liberal Democrat County Councillor Malcolm Cowan asked the Tory administration to sign up to the 10:10 campaign. 10:10 is a campaign to do as many things as possible to reduce your carbon footprint by 10% in the year 2010.

The County Council conceded to Malcolm's request and will now be signing up to commit the council to reducing their carbon footprint by 10%.

Malcolm said: 'Climate change is one of the biggest challenges facing out planet and I am really pleased the county council saw sense and signed up to play their part; this is by contrast to Welwyn Hatfield, where the request has fallen on deaf ears. I am disappointed that the borough has yet again failed to take real steps to respond to what is a national movement.

'Residents can sign up to this campaign and there are lots of things that they can do to reduce their carbon footprint and save themselves money in the long term'
