BY-ELECTION WELWYN HATFIELD 3 January 200812.03.00pm GMT Fri 30th Nov 2007
The Welham Green by-election for Welwyn Hatfield has now been called and will take place on 3rd January. This by-election has resulted from Tory Councillor Peter O'Brien standing down. John Elvy, who works at the University of Herts in Hatfield has been selected by the Liberal Democrats to fight the seat. John will be a strong and fresh voice for Welham Green, campaigning to get our potholed roads sorted, vandalism dealt with , litter swept, to get effective action against crime, and to scrap the unfair council tax. There are significant issues of social cohesion in Welham Green which need to be tackled in a constructive manner. To date the Tory council has failed utterly to tackle the issues, particularly with regard to youth policies. We believe that a Liberal voice on the council would be of benefit in getting a fair deal for all residents of Welham Green. Results from our residents survey show that problems with highways maintenance, traffic and parking rank high amongst residents' concerns - all areas where the conservative district and county councils have failed to make Welham Green a priority.
